Surfing in Munich

Surfing an urban river?? Yep, you can catch waves in Munich, right in the centre of town on the Eisbach. The Eisbach (meaning Ice Brook in German) is one of many underground channels through the city from the nearby Isar River, but for 2km it flows overground with enough power to create a ‘standing wave’ that just keeps going – right through the famously lovely park the English Garden. Pros have been surfing in Munich on the Eisbach River since the 70’s and it attracts quite a crowd all year round.

Surf’s up!

Over the years the famous wave which is 1 meter high has attracted a whole bunch of surfing pros and it’s great fun to watch them jump in from the sides and ride the wave (and you get to see a few wipe out too..) The man-made wave has been attracting surfers and even kayakers here since the 70’s but because the water is really shallow here it is only for pros.

Grab a view point at the Eisbach bridge to see the pros grabbing some seriously fun waves, or if you’re good at surfing have a go yourself! It’s for experts only though so don’t be tempted if it’s your first time on a board. There’s even a documentary “Keep Surfing” which won at the Munich Film Festival back in 2009. This tradition also takes place in winter but much more comfortable on a hot summer’s day.
