Rotterdam is famous for its architecture and skyline, and with summer on the horizon, we have some great recommendations of where to catch the best views of the cityscape. The vistas are scorching hot even when the weather isn’t, and these are the perfect lookouts for sunset over the city on a summer’s evening. Whether you fancy a sunny terrace with a good Dutch beer, some dizzying heights, or a chilled picnic spot; here are our top spots for the best views of Rotterdam- handpicked by our expert all-star staff! Grab your selfie stick and get along to these knock out viewpoints.
Not many places have a central station as good looking as Rotterdam (ok New York is pretty good..) but did you know that you can see the Central Station from the rooftop bar on the neighbouring building; the Groothandelsgebouw? This bar has awesome views of west Rotterdam and the city boulevard below.
Iconic Erasmus Bridge
This iconic feature on the skyline is one of the emblems of Rotterdam and can be seen from all the waterfront, with the best views alongside the bridge itself at Maasboulevard. We love chilling out along the river by the side of Erasmusbridge – and of course you have to go across it. The views from the bridge itself give you a great panorama of the port, and from either side you get a different Rotterdam skyline scene. Also a great spot at sunset, walking along the banks gives an awesome view of the city. A secret tip for a different view of the Erasmus bridge is to check out the 7th floor terrace bar of the nhow Hotel which looks right down on top of the bridge!
Views from the top
The tallest building in the Netherlands was always going to be a good place to get a bird’s eye view of the city- welcome to the viewing deck at the panoramic Euromast bar. Set in Het Park and with an interesting history behind the building, you may not be able to reach the top of the 185m structure, but from the 112m terrace the view is certainly spectacular!
For an older building then you can step back in time and visit the tower of the Laurenskerk. This church has views around the city center and dates back to the Middle Ages!
Famous Port Views
There are a couple of great spots to grab a drink on the waterfront and enjoy the view, such as the famous Hotel New York which has been a historical hotspot in the city over the years, and our staff favourite; the food lover’s favourite terrace at the Fenix Food Factory, but for a very historical and unique Rotterdam experience, we love getting onboard the most famous ship in the port.
The SS Rotterdam is now docked in Rotterdam for good, but her voyages are world famous beginning with her first transatlantic journey to New York in 1959, loaded with 1200 eager passengers. You can do tours of the ship to explore below deck and there are different bars and restaurants to enjoy, but the outside Lido Terrace – complete with swimming pool- is a great spot to enjoy the city views on a sundeck with a difference. Check out the port views from afloat on this unique piece of history!
Views from the Park
If you’re looking for some greenery and outdoor space; check out the lovely main park in Rotterdam at Kralingse Bos. The view across the lake here (Kralings Plas) is gorgeous and a favourite place for locals and visitors alike. If you want a restaurant or bar terrace al fresco, then check out the gardens and views at the windmilled De Tuin restaurant, or the lakeside terrace at the peaceful De Schone Lei. You can also bring a blanket and pick yourself a spot for a picnic on the lakeside with a backdrop of the city across the water. Check out what’s going on in the park during the summer festivals and enjoy the best nature spot in the city!
