Top Things To Do in Bilbao

Top Things To Do in Bilbao

Heading to the largest city in Basque country and looking for things to do? From fantastic art, to amazing surf options, Bilbao is ready for you!

Located in a valley surrounded by green mountains and the Cantabrian Sea, Bilbao is a hidden Spanish gem. Being the largest city in Basque Country, it’s the economic capital of the region, meaning there’s actually lots to do. While most travellers tend to head to Spain’s Mediterranean coast, or Madrid, Bilbao is a destination full of surprises. Generally speaking, the vibe (and language!) in Bilbao is vastly different from the rest of the country, which is part of what makes it so alluring to visit. But one of the best parts of Bilbao? It’s small size in comparison to other popular Spanish spots. But rather than keep talking about it, let’s get into the top things to do in Bilbao!

1. Go on a Free Walking Tour

The best way to explore a city is getting into a free walking tour. Bilbao is full of hidden gems and there’s truly no better way to explore any destination than with a local guide. Not only will you get to see the best of the city, you’ll also get to hear lots of great anecdotes you won’t necessarily find in travel guide books. And while Bilbao may not be a huge city, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of history and culture here. You will get around the city and hear about all the stories about Bilbao history and culture. Most tours last at least two hours, and while they might be free, it’s always encouraged giving the guide a tip at the end.

2. Casco Viejo or Siete Calles

Casco Viejo is Bilbao’s Old Town, and is a labyrinth of narrow streets dotted with small shops, bars, and restaurants. And in the heart of Bilbao’s Casco Viejo is Siete Calles, which is a series of 7 streets full of atmosphere. You’ll find lots of ways to occupy your time while here, but there’s also lots of landmarks you won’t want to miss out on, including the Cathedral de Santiago de Bilbao, the Ribera market, Plaza Nueva and the Basque Museum in the Plaza Unamuno. And once you get a little peckish, you can fill up on some pintxos. But more on that later!

3. Museo de Bellas Artes

When we said Bilbao was home to some fantastic art, we weren’t kidding. The Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts), is a once in a lifetime experience. Founded in 1908, it officially opened in 1924, and is considered one of the finest museums in Spain. Housing more than 10,000 pieces of art, ranging from sculptures, paintings, drawings, and beyond, you’re bound to find something that will spark your interest. The collection consists of three fundamental collections, including Renaissance & Baroque, Contemporary, and Basque art. And if you’re travelling on a budget, you can visit the museum for free from 18:00-20:00 daily.

4. Guggenheim Museum

Regarded as one of the most iconic structures in Bilbao, you’ll want to check out the Guggenheim Museum. Opened in 1997 as an attempt to bring life back to Bilbao (and it certainly has!), the museum is truly an absolute must while here. Sitting in a beautiful piece of architecture by Frank Ghery, the museum has tons of works to marvel at both inside and out. The Guggenheim Museum is home to works by Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Eduardo Chillida, Yves Klein and Anslem Kiefer, just to name a few. And even if you don’t consider yourself a huge art fan, you’ll at least be able to admire the building itself.

5. Funicular

Who doesn’t love a panoramic view?! Visitors to Bilbao are missing out if they don’t take a ride in the Artxanda funicular. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it connects the center of the city to a wonderful viewpoint of Mount Artxanda. The views are spectacular and on clear days you can see the sea from the top. For those after envy-inducing Instagram shots, this might be the place for it!

6. Bizkaia Bridge

This designated UNESCO World Heritage Site was inaugurated in 1893, and was the first metal structure ferry bridge in the world. To put it simply, the Bizkaia Bridge was an engineering marvel at the time, as well as a symbol and great monument of the Industrial Revolution. Nowadays, it’s still used as a way to cross the estuary on its huge hanging barge. But if you’d rather an even higher view, you can access the wooden walkway located on top of the bridge, giving you unbeatable views of the Ría.

7. A little surfing!

While Bilbao might not sit directly on the water like Barcelona, you can easily access its beaches on a very short metro ride. Our top beach recommendations are Sopelana, Arrietara, and Atxabiribil, all of which are perfect for surfing, swimming, or just chilling. Arrietara is the hottest spot for surfing, and hosts several annual events, including World Bodyboard, and numerous ASP championships. You’ll also find plenty of surf clubs and schools if you want to try it out for yourself.

As for Atxabiribil, it also hosts lots of important sporting events, such as the Projunior test of the European ASP circuit. But if you visit Bilbao in winter, we still recommend a visit solely for the spectacular sunset views from the cliffs surrounding the beaches.

8. Indulge in some Pintxos

Okay, so if you’ve ever researched Spain, or have visited before, you’ve definitely heard of tapas. And while they definitely exist in Bilbao, they go by a totally different name: pintxos! The biggest difference, however, is that all the small bites of food are served on bread. So unless you’re celiac, you should be able to rock up to any pintxos bar and eat your weight in tiny food! Another thing to keep in mind is that Spanish food, and pintxos aren’t always vegetarian or vegan friendly, so make sure to ask around for the best spots to accommodate your diet.

As for drinks, there’s a few special ones you’ll want to try; Txakoli is a crisp white wine from the area, and Kalimotxo is a red wine mixed with with Coca-Cola. While that might sound a bit risky, we promise it’s tasty!

9. La Ribera Market

No trip anywhere is complete without a visit to the local market. La Ribera Market is located on the river’s edge next to Casco Viejo, and is a buzzing spot where you can pick up some delectable goodies for a picnic, or even some souvenirs for yourself and friends to take back home. It’s also the biggest indoor market in Europe! While the current building was completed in 1929, La Ribera sits on the site where the original market stood, which dates back to the 14th century. And this place isn’t just for daytime shopping; come nightfall, you can visit and enjoy live music and drinks, which makes for a perfect night out.

10. Teatro Arriaga

One look at Teatro Arriaga and you’ll swear you were transported to Paris! The 19th century Neo-Baroque building was actually inspired by Palais Garnier, which is why it gives off those Parisian vibes. If you want to take a peak inside at the gorgeous red and golden tones, we recommend signing up for a tour, which only costs around 5€. Alternatively, you can check their schedule and pop in for a performance.

Where to Stay in Bilbao

Located only minutes from the main train station, our top choice in Bilbao is Latroupe La Granja Hostel. This brand new spot offers up some urban chic vibes, but on a budget, so you can spend that extra money on some tasty pintxos. La Granja offers a variety of rooms, including dorms and privates, so whatever your needs are, they can meet them! After a day of touring Bilbao, you can come back to the hostel and grab a drink at their bar, or participate in one of their many – and FREE – activities.
