阿姆斯特丹概述

The Flying Pig, Amsterdam have prepared an Amsterdam Overview, giving ideas on where to go, what to see and much more for your time in this fascinating city!

Museums

If you want to get a taste of cultural Amsterdam, you have to visit some of its great exhibits and Amsterdam has over 50 museums, and galleries to explore! Besides the famous Van Gogh, Anne Frank and Rijksmuseum exhibits, there is a wide range of other museums worth visiting. How about a taste of life on a traditional houseboat, an impression of modern photography in FOAM or a closer look at beer brewing (and tasting) at the Heineken Museum? Here are some of the backpacker favourites.

Rijksmuseum

Jan Luijkenstraat 1

The Rijksmuseum is the largest museum of art and history in the Netherlands. It is perhaps best known for its collection of 17th century Dutch masters, with twenty Rembrandts and many other highlights from that period, including works by Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen. There is an annex of the museum at Schiphol Airport – where the entrance is free.

Sex Museum

Damrak 18

What can we say? There’s a lot of nakedness here and sex pictures from across the ages. Expect phallic statues and plenty of other art to satisfy your erotic curiosity! It’s essential to see this when you visit Amsterdam, if only once!

Smart Shops and Coffee Shops

There really is something to suit everyone who’s looking for a smoke in Amsterdam. Some coffee shops serve nice drinks and food too, but all of them have an ‘actual menu’ for you to choose from! Be careful though because some of the stuff can be much more potent than what you’re used to back home! For a list of the best famous coffee shops and smart (mushroom) shops in town, just ask when you check in.

Shops and Markets

You’ll find all your shopping needs fulfilled on the Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk, the two pedestrian streets that run from Central Station to Muntplein. Close to Muntplein you’ll also find the Kalvertorena huge shopping mall. A great alternative is the nine little parallel streets that cross the city canals, or the Haarlemmerstraat, which has plenty of trendy clothing shops. If you like markets then check out Waterlooplein Flea Market – the largest in Amsterdam, offering anything from bric-a-brac and second hand clothes to old records and DVDs. Alternatively the Albert Cuyp Market is the busiest and most famous day market, located in the charming student areaDe Pijp.

Bikes

A visit to Amsterdam isn’t complete without a bike ride. Like everything it can be dangerous if you don’t keep your wits about you, but it is quick, cheap and well . . . the Dutch way to get around! Bikes can be rented for about €7.50 a day.

The Locals

Most Dutch people speak really good English (especially in Amsterdam) and they’re usually very happy to help tourists find their way around, so if you get lost just ask!

Amsterdam Overview: Festivals and Events

Latin Festival

With this event the organisers hope to bring the warm and exotic Latin sound to larger audiences. This is surely the largest Latin festival in Europe with national and international superstars coming from all corners of the world.

Pinkpop

Europe’s oldest pop festival is still one of the best! Pinkpop annually attracts around 60,000 people to Megaland in Landgraaf. It’s always in the weekend of Pentecost!
