Famous Hostels Eurotrip: Rome, Italy

Rome is the second stop of my one-month Famous Hostels Eurotrip!

Rome, the center of what was once an incredible empire. The remains of the Empire can be found all around the Italian capital and if you think you found a stunning building there are about 435 morewandering around Rome leaves you speechless.

After exploring Athens I took the ferry to Italy with my 铁路 Global Pass. The ferry was included in my Interrail pass and I thought it would be a cool experience to travel by sea. I’d never taken an overnight ferry before so it got me curious. The ferry was actually really nice; there was a restaurant, a big lounge and even a casino.

After a long journey I arrived at the 亚历山德罗宫旅馆 in Rome. I was very happy to find out the hostel was literally next to the main train station (Termini). From the hostel you can walk all around Rome or make use of the excellent metro system that brings you anywhere in the city in only a couple of minutes.

On the night I arrived I went straight into the old center. The hostel staff told me the Trevi fountain looks beautiful during the night so I thought why not have a look. I was curious what Rome would be like so I went for a walk around the city. I was very happy I did that because the next day I realised the city should be seen during both day and night, it’s like two different, stunning cities.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned during my travels it’s that if you see a fun group you just walk up to them and ask if you can join.

After my evening walk I went to the rooftop bar at the hostel. There were a lot of people and I walked up to a group to join them. Not being afraid to do that makes travelling solo a lot easier and way more fun. The best thing is that people actually really like when you do that and you immediately make some amazing friends.

The hostel organizes some really fun activities, such as a pub crawl three times a week. Everyone was talking about it so if you’re there I would definitely recommend that you take part!

The next morning I woke up early to join the Rome Free Walking Tour. I always do walking tours in a new city, it’s the best way to see all the sites and meet some other travellers. We started at the Spanish steps and walked all around the city to the Vatican. The Pope gives a speech every Wednesday morning so if you’re there make sure you go and have a look! Also, if you’re planning to visit the Vatican get your tickets in advance; the queue is one of the longest I’ve ever seen!

After the walking tour a couple of us stuck together and walked to the Pantheon, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Villa Borghese, the monument of Victor Emanuel and the Trevi Fountain. I realised that Rome actually is a really cheap city since you can see all the famous sites from outside without spending any money. Only if you really want to go in or get a tour guide it will cost you a few Euros but apart from that it can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.

This ticket is only 10 euros (7,50 for EU citizens under 26 – which is me!).

I did visit the Colloseum, Roman Forum and Paletine Hill, which are located really close to each other and can be visited with a combination ticket. You can buy the ticket online for two euros more to make sure you can go straight in (also these queues can be very long), although I went at the end of the day when there was no line at all!

It’s like you’re back in time, not for a few years but thousands and thousands of years.

I loved seeing all the sites in Rome; it’s such an amazing city. As I wrote before, you literally don’t know where to look as there are so many stunning buildings. I stayed for three nights and had two full days to see the city. I saw everything I wanted to see but if you have more time make sure you also do a trip to Pompeii or stay at Hostel of The Sun from Europe’s Famous Hostels in Napels, which is close by and also a really cool city.

After these amazing days I had to say goodbye to Italy again and caught the train to France! I will spend some time in Nice, where I am now. I will write more about my time here soon. In the mean time, make sure to follow my journey on the Famous Hostels Instagram!
