Jerusalem: Off the Beaten Path

Ein Kerem

In the west of Jerusalem lies an alluring neighborhood that offers a placid and relaxing energy. Fortunately, not many tourists know about this hidden gem. Locals do however wander the streets frequently in hopes of an escape from the bustling city. Nestled right next to Jerusalem, there is a stunning landscape that surrounds the village. Remaining in Jerusalem fashion, the walls are limestone with grand churches overlooking the quaint houses. It even has religious value as the birthplace of John the Baptist. Lots of shops and restaurants line the streets while maintaining its homey vibe. Come get lost in the appealing town of Ein Kerem and enjoy the breathtaking view.

Nachlaot Neighborhood

Another beautiful neighborhood to take a stroll through is located in the cluster of center city Jerusalem. This area specifically stands out because of its twisty roads and the mass amount of hidden courtyards to stumble upon. Over the last 30 years, this community has been increasingly becoming the most popular place to live inviting visitors from all over the world. The stone houses were built in the 1870’s making this village full of history. It was once said to have the most synagogues, containing over 300 in such a small area. Currently only around 100 are left leaving the city with the quiet memory of their previous, more religious time. The smell of food and the sound of laughter will attract any traveller to explore.

Spots To Visit

Valley of the Cross

Also located in western Jerusalem, this valley is the perfect place for a picnic at sunset. The views around this area are marvelous and cannot be missed. It is also right next to Gan Sacher which is Jerusalem’s largest public park. This makes it very convenient for a nice stroll in the park after sunset. The Israel Museum and the Knesset are also nearby offering the opportunity to learn about Israel’s history without having to wander very far. They both overlook the valley with the neighborhood of Rehavia on its east.

Montefiore Windmill, Yemin Moshe

Yemin Moshe is another neighborhood with gorgeous architecture and views. The alleys and shops are an enticing place to explore and wander throughout. It was built in the 1890’s due to the overcrowding problem in the old city. It was meant to be a Jewish settlement and expanded in size rapidly. The Montefiore Windmill was built in response to the increasing population meant to provide a source of income. Today, it is a beautiful place, an Instagramable spot. It is visible from all over the city and stands now as a landmark. Definitely something to check out if you want a good selfie.

The First Station

Everything one could want is conveniently located inside of Jerusalem’s First Station. You can find a variety of cuisine and dining options, anything related to art, and even concerts! It is family-friendly oriented attracting all different types of crowds. On the weekends, they provide specific events for families with children. They offer an array of tours including walking and Segway tours around the city. They are helpful when planning your trip, giving an assortment of ideas and suggestions. Don’t miss out on their open markets giving visitors the chance to buy anything from jewelry to fresh cheese. The First Station is the place to find anything one could want!

Jerusalem Cinematheque

Ever wanted to dig deeper into an archive of old films and movies? Fortunately, Jerusalem has just the place. It is also a movie theater that shows classics as well as new Hollywood films. With great seating and marvelous sound, this may be arguably the best movie theater in Jerusalem. It is a place of culture and reminiscence for Jerusalem’s history and its present. During summer, they also feature the Jerusalem Film Festival which is appreciated by many. It lasts for a week and attracts food vendors, music, and large crowds. Many movies are shown and it is a great activity to partake in during the hot summer months.

Food To Eat

Jachnun Bar

Not to worry, we did not forget about the food. When visiting Jerusalem, trying Yemenite cuisine is an absolute must. They have options for everyone; whether you are a carnivore or a vegan, many choices will be provided. Their hours are open 24/7 with two different locations available so there will be no excuse to not give these dishes a go. The atmosphere is friendly and homey, leaving guests with a full stomach and a light temperament. It is somewhere you would walk by and never realize the delectable dream located right inside the doors. Give Jachnun Bar a try; everyone always raves about it.

Reshta

A slightly newer restaurant located outside of Jerusalem, Reshta is an Arab restaurant that provides visitors with a real taste of the authentic cuisine. The chef’s garden is adjacent to the restaurant so he often uses the vegetables from his personal garden in the dishes. Guests will know exactly where their food comes from with this farm to table establishment. There are numerous options for all kind of eaters as well. The staff and decor are welcoming and inviting putting the customers at a state of ease. The reviews are nothing but a flourish of compliments; everyone recognizes how special it is! Reshta knows exactly how to make reasonably priced dishes that taste amazing too.
