5 Summer Time Things to do in Copenhagen

Summer in Copenhagen is a time to enjoy long and light evenings and to bask in the sunshine. We might not be the Mediterranean, but our summers are still hot! Since Copenhagen is built on an island of canals, we’ve got a lot of surrounding sea water, beautiful beaches, and plenty of green space to to cool down in and enjoy. There’s plenty going on here so welcome to our top 5 Summer time things to do in Copenhagen.

1. Swim in the Harbour Baths

One of our favourite spots to cool off in the city is Islands Brygge. This is one of the liveliest spots in Copenhagen in the Summer as there is a picnic & BBQ area, chill-out and sunbathing space, and of course open-air swimming in the Harbour Baths! These are parts of the city canal that has been ringed off as a designated swimming area and is clean and safe to swim in. There are several around town at various locations but this one is the most popular for sunbathing and people watching. There are even diving boards at various heights, so you can check out your skills from up high!

2. Take a Canal Stroll

The famous canals around the city are a welcome sight in summer where you can take a boat ride or a stroll along the sides with a nice breeze. Copenhagen is an old Viking harbour so we have plenty of historic and scenic walks along the waterfront. If you’re feeling a little adventurous you can hire a kayak and take a tour. The famous harbour of Nyhavn is very popular and a great spot for grabbing a drink or ice cream and the colourful houses set the scene for lots of Copenhagen postcards. You can also take harbour tours from here. For something more local check out Christianshavn which also has a pleasant network of canals where you can dip your feet in the water. There are plenty of sights around the city that look great from the canal side, you just need to take a stroll to find them all!

3. Festival Season in the City

Summer means festivals in Copenhagen, and along with famous street parties like Distortion and Friday Rock parties at Tivoli, there are plenty of others. Check out Copenhagen Jazz Festival from July 5th to 14th: there are always loads of events taking place with International artists and Danish ones, at big venues and at smaller ones. It’s a mixed bag with DJ sets alongside the more traditional Nat King Cole line-ups. Check out their website for events, some are even free! For the fashion crowd, Copenhagen Fashion Week takes place 5th to 9th August and is recognised as the leading light in setting global trends in Scandinavian design. See what all the beautiful people will be wearing at the free events in the town square!

Copenhagen Pride Festival 2019 shimmies into town from the 13th to 18th of August for the city’s most sparkly and outrageous party. There are plenty of concerts and parties around town, including a main stage in the town square. There are also workshops and talks, as well as the more festive elements and concerts which you can take part in with the purchase of a wristband pass. Don’t miss the best bit as the Pride Parade winds through the city’s neighbourhoods showcasing the fanciest costumes in town!

4. Enjoy the Parks and Green Spaces

Copenhagen is a super green city, so summer time is perfect to enjoy the parks and flowers around the city. There are plenty of them, and lots of peaceful designated areas, including gardens and cemeteries even. For literature fans, you can find H.C. Andersen’s grave in Copenhagen. There are also great skate parks including the awesome Fælledparken里夫沙伦, if you want to take your board and have a ride.

Langelinie Park is a great place to wander around as it has awesome views – here you can check out the famous Little Mermaid statue and see a panorama of the harbour. King’s Garden is also popular with locals due to its central location next to Rosenborg Castle.

5. Svanemølle beach and Harbour Bath

Copenhagen is on the sea and that means beaches! There are some amazing natural beaches a short train trip from town, but for the closest, check out the popular Svanemølle beach. There’s a small area of sand and a long jetty to jump off or sunbathe on the decks. It’s located just a short walk from the Nordhavn S-train station. There are city views from here so it’s not as natural and peaceful as Amager Strand outside the city. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to cool down. Get here early as it gets crowded!

Wherever you go in Copenhagen during your visit, we know you’ll love it! We hope you enjoyed our tips for Copenhagen in the sunshine.
