Athens backpacker: 5 things you should do to enjoy the city

Vibrant and peppered with ancient and modern wonders, Athens should be a destination on any European getaway. It also doesn’t have to be expensive.

If you want to see Athens’ major sites book your Walking Tour and be amazed with the wonders of this city!

Check out our guide to 5 Things To Do in Athens on a Budget.

1. Free Weekend Tours in Athens

Yes free! The city is kind enough to organise weekend tours of sites of interest, with expert tour guides from the City of Athens Cultural Organisation.

While you’re walking around town don’t miss Syntagma Square (Plateia Syntagmatos) where you can see the Parliament building where you can see the guards (evrones) in their pom pom shoes as they do their hourly high-kick changing of the guards – we love their traditional costumes.

Another great site to explore is the Central Market on Athens Street where you can see plenty of amazing food in the morning – and taste it at great value in the surrounding restaurants.

2. Climb the Lycabettus Hill

Want an amazing view of the city? Then climb one of the hills! The most famous viewpoint is the Lykavittos Hill (the Hill of Wolves) which has spectacular views of the Acropolis and city below from its pine slopes. Check out the Chapel of Agios Georgios at the peak which you can see from all over the city. There are some well placed cafes to take in the view and give your feet a rest (and a funicular for those who don’t want the hike)

You can also follow the Filpappou Hill around the Acropolis above Monastiraki, with a whole host of ancient sites on the way including Roman and Greek 5th century BC monuments including philosopher Socrates’ prison and the Church of Agios Dimities Loumbardiaris. The neighbouring Pnyx is also known for its rich history.

3. Visit Ancient Sites: The Acropolis, Theatre of Dionysus, Ancient Agora…

With the famous 5th century BC Parthenon looking down across the city, you will be constantly reminded of the Athenian Empire and the rich history that this marvellous city preserves. There is also a number of sites that are free including Aristotle’s Lyceum.

There are so many ‘don’t miss’ sites in Athens, such as the Acropolis, Theatre of Dionysus and the Ancient Agora, but don’t worry – you can buy a ticket that includes entrance to all of them and the Kerameikos. Other sites to see are the amazing galleries of the Acropolis Museum, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Olympic stadium and the Roman theatre (161 AD) of Herod Atticus.

4. Plaka Neighbourhood

Wonder these streets and check out the old Turkish neighbourhood of Plaka – the oldest in the city. This is a great way to see the modern and ancient sites as you can buy handicrafts and see artisans at work or enjoy a great restaurant.

As the narrow streets wind down from the Acropolis to the neighbourhood below, there is a mixture of traditional houses and quiet streets along with the more touristy spots – but it still has charm and it’s a don’t miss place to wander around in the day or evening. From here take a walk around the lovely area of Monastiraki – great for grabbing a coffee and watching the crowds go by. Don’t miss a wander around the Roman Agora here which is visible from the street.

5. Street Art Athens

For something alternative to ancient sites and delicious food, try exploring the street art scene in Athens. After lots of much publicised political problems in the past few years, there is no shortage of graffiti and art expressing opinions on life and culture in Greece today.

Supposedly one of the most decorated cities in the world, Athens has seen a big shift in their street art movement – and you can see it all for free! The city is covered in spray paint so you are going to see plenty of it.
