Best walking tour in Porto

The meeting point of the best walking tour in Porto is the Garrett Monument, in front of the Town Hall. From here you’ll go to visit the first attraction of the city: Sao Bento.

Sao Bento is one of the most beautiful stations in the world. It’s also a must-see attraction if you are visiting Porto. This station is very different from all others. It’s special thanks to the presence of 20000 azulejos, which are tiles hand painted. These azulejos have an important and historical meaning. They tell the history of Portugal and events such as the Conquest of Ceuta and other important battles. The building is majestic, so much so that it doesn’t look like a station. When you’ll enter the station you’ll admire the fantastic azulejos, and you’ll notice the influence of the French Renaissance.

For a great cultural experience, you’ll visit the Porto Cathedral, also called Sè Do Porto.

Porto Cathedral is a church dating back to the 12th century. It’s also known as Sè Do Porto. This cathedral was originally conceived as a fortress. Today you can still see this characteristic in its facade and the bell towers. In this cathedral, you’ll find different styles, such as Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque. The facade is the oldest element of the church. Instead, the cloister is very characteristic because it is covered with white and blue azulejos. From the cloister, you’ll have access to Casa Do Cobildo, where you’ll find the treasure of the cathedral.

Then the tour continues to the best-known district of Porto. We’re talking about the amazing Ribeira.

Ribeira is the most characteristic district of the city. Thanks to its beauty and peculiarity, it has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s considered the medieval heart of Porto, with a lot of characteristic and colourful houses. You’ll be amazed! This district is made up of a lot of very narrow streets that form a sort of labyrinth. You’ll likely get lost, but it’s the best way to discover the Ribeira. Here you’ll find the main attractions of the city, such as the Palacio da Bolsa and the Sao Francisco church.

Palacio da Bolsa

From the Ribeira, the next majestic monument of the tour is Palacio Da Bolsa.

Palacio da Bolsa is one of the most important historical monuments in Porto. This great place is located in the historic centre of the city and over the years has acquired remarkable importance. This symbol of Porto has also been declared UNESCO World Heritage. Over the years, the most important commercial decisions passed through this building. It was the headquarter of the Associação Comercial do Porto. You’ll enter Palacio da Bolsa and you’ll visit different rooms and halls, each one with different decorations and characteristics. You’ll enjoy this place!

During the walking tour, you’ll also pass in front of the Dom Luis Bridge. You’ll love the view from the bridge.

Dom Luis Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Porto. It’s made up of an iron and metal structure that resembles the Eiffel Tower. It was built in 1886 by a student of Eiffel. This symbol of Porto was dedicated to Louis of Braganza, King of Portugal.

The Dom Luís I Bridge has one of the best viewpoints in the city. From here you’ll admire the cathedral and the famous Torre dei Chierici. It’s characterized by two floors to facilitate the circulation of pedestrians and cars. Another important function is that it connects the city with Vila Nova de Gaia, where you can find the famous Port wine cellars.

San Francisco Church

The last part of the walking tour will take you to San Francisco Church.

The Church of San Francisco is the most important Gothic building in Porto, located in the heart of the historic centre of the city. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also a Portuguese National Monument. So you can’t miss it! The Church was founded by the Franciscans in the 14th century. Here you can find different styles: the exterior of the church is Gothic, but the whole interior is Baroque. The main facade of the church has a richly decorated Gothic rose window. This is the only surviving original decoration.

Inside you’ll visit the chapel of San Giovanni Battista built in the fifteenth century in Manueline style. It’s the main chapel of the church of San Francisco. Inside you can also visit a museum dedicated to St. Francis with its catacomb cemetery.
