Ericeira is a Portuguese surf town and a popular holiday resort with nice buildings and beautiful beaches. Fishing traditions are still a thing here, and the city is famous for its seafood. The name comes from the sea urchin (ouriço do mar in Portuguese).

Located in the western part of Portugal, on the Atlantic Ocean, Ericeira is a small town popular especially among water sports enthusiasts. First things first – the city centre!

The life of the town is spinning around Largo Conde da Ericeira. This is where the local market, Mercado Municipal da Ericeira, is located. There you can buy fruit, vegetables, fresh fish and other products. Behind the square begins the beautiful old town, its central place is the Praça da República square. The streets of Ericeira are colorful, the cobblestones are arranged in interesting patterns and some corners resemble the Greek island of Mykonos thanks to the blue and white houses. There are a lot of decorations with azulejos and other interesting architectural details.

Next stop – coast

Along the coast, at the top of the cliff, there is a cobbled street called Rua Capitão João Lopes, separated from the abyss by a white and blue wall. It leads to the centrally located Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Beach), where you can buy fish from boats returning from fishing. In the vicinity, there is a fishing port (Porto de Pesca) built in 1973–1985. Further north, Praia do Norte stretches, open to the ocean and high waves. Even further, on the northern outskirts of Ericeira, you can relax on the narrow Praia de São Sebastião. In the south, there are two popular beaches, sheltered from the northern winds: Praia da Baleia (Whale Beach) and Praia do Sul (South Beach). In the distance, you can see the impressive building of the Vila Galé Ericeira Hotel.

Last but not least – beaches

Outside the city, there is Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas – the beach popular among surfing schools. This is where competitions are often organized. There is a parking lot, a large restaurant, and free toilets at the beach.

What to do in Ericeira

The town is picturesquely situated next to beautiful beaches. It is worth going for a walk by the ocean or trekking along the cliffs: from the beach of Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas there is a trail leading north to Praia dos Coxos.
