Not many people know about this, but every time you bump into another culture, most people experience the same emotions. And those are the 5 stages of cultural shock when traveling. Check out our article to prepare yourself for the emotional journey you are going to experience during your actual physical journey.
1. The Honeymoon
This is the initial phase when everything is perfect, at least on paper. You just planned your vacation and you cannot wait to visit the beautiful destination you picked. It gives you joy, you feel like anything could happen in your journey and you are so excited about it!
2. Hostility and Irritation
That is the part when problems arise. If you do not speak the local language, you are probably going to experience some tough moments, especially in transit spots you cannot avoid like train or bus stations. And if the local culture is different than yours, maybe less welcoming and less keen to help tourists you are probably going to be pretty frustrated at first.
3. Adjustment
But do not worry! Although you might encounter some difficulties, you must always believe in yourself and your ability to adapt to new situations. After all, you are a traveler, that is what you do! And soon enough the adjustment phase will come! Maybe you will learn a couple of sentences that can help you ask for information, or maybe you will start knowing your destination well enough to not get lost, or maybe you will meet a local that will make you understand the culture a little better. Either way, your trip will start getting easier and easier the more you stay.
4. Acculturation
That is when you actually start knowing and appreciating the culture. You fall in love with some local food, you meet some people you enjoy spending time with, or you just love the vibe of the city. Either way, you are having a good time!
5. Re-Acculturation
Also called the “I do not want to leave but I have to phase”, but, unfortunately, all good things finish eventually. That is the part of traveling nobody likes, for sure, but a home is a nice place as well. And in this phase you might want to talk about your trip a lot, so you might feel misunderstood if people do not want to hear all your stories. But that is totally fine! Everyone goes through that at least once in their lives. Just wait for your next travel and appreciate the memories you made!
