Traditional German Food & Drink

Like in most countries, every region has its own delicacies. Frankfurt is in the German state of Hessen, and the food here is very different from places like Berlin or Munich. While the staples remain the same, the difference lays in the preparation and seasonings. This section will explore the best local delicacies from Frankfurt, all of which are absolute musts!

Handkäs mit Musik

Starting our Frankfurt food guide with an appetiser, Handkäs mit Musik is a local favourite. This hard cheese is fried up with onions and caraway, and served with rye bread. But don’t take the name lightly! The name translates to ‘hand cheese with music’, and the music refers to sounds you’ll likely make a few hours after eating it. So don’t say you weren’t warned!

Grüne Söße

This sauce is a treasure in Hessen. So much so that Frankfurt even hosts an annual festival every May celebrating it! Grüne soße is a creamy sauce made from 7 herbs all found in Hessen. You can find it an all traditional restaurants, and it’s always served with boiled eggs, potatoes, and sausage. But if you’re vegetarian, you can always skip the meat and still indulge in Frankfurt’s greatest delicacy!

Frankfurter Würst

Germans take pride in their wide variety of meat preparation, and Frankfurt has their own spin on the traditional sausage. Frankfurter würst is a long, thin pork sausage made encased in sheep’s intestine. It’s lightly smoked at a low temperate to give it a distinct taste. It’s also a staple at the Christmas markets in the beautiful Alt Stadt!

Apfelwein

Germany isn’t just all about the world-famous beer. Apfelwein (apple wine) is easily the most famous drink in Frankfurt, and it’s very refreshing on a hot summer’s day. Similar in taste to cider, you can order it three different ways: pure, with sparkling water, or with lemonade. Locals have a variety of names for it, including Ebbelwoi and Äppler, and is a key item in our Frankfurt food guide!

Apfelwein at Main Cafe

Eager to try out some of the local delicacies? We promise you won’t be disappointed! Our favourite restaurants include: Apfelwein Solzer, Dauth Schneider, and zum Gemalten Haus.

Street Food

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, then picking up street food and heading to a park is a great way to spend some time. While there’s no shame in bringing your own picnic, Frankfurt has tons of great spots for street food!

Aroma

Are you a vegan or vegetarian? Then you HAVE to check out this place! Located on Oeder Weg, Aroma is one of the most popular spots in town. Which is why we had to include it in our Frankfurt food guide. But if you come for lunch or dinner, expect to wait in a line! So make sure you’re not in a rush because this place is one you won’t want to miss. After all, lines don’t form at average food joints!

Meral Döner Boot

If you end up chilling by the river on the Sachsenhausen side and suddenly feel a wave of hunger, you’re in luck! Meral Döner Boot is a tiny boat where you can get some tasty sandwiches, with meat, fish, or veggies. It’s only around in the warmer months, so be sure to check it out!

Döner Kitchen by 486

New in the Frankfurt food scene, Döner Kitchen by 486 in Bockenheim is a hit. This place is super special because of its social cause. A portion of each sale is put into a special fund, which allows the shop to give out 300 döner sandwiches a month to homeless people in Frankfurt. You get a delicious meal, and you also get to indirectly help a great cause.

Cafés & Bakeries

Germany is famous for their delicious cakes, and affinity for coffee. If you’re in need of a little java, or want to indulge in a delectable cake or pastry and people watch, Frankfurt has tons of spots for you to patron. From classic cafés, to trendy spots, this section will guide you through our top picks in Frankfurt.

Main Gold

This timeless and classic café is one of our favourites in Frankfurt. Located near Frankfurt Zoo, Main Gold Café has both indoor and outdoor seating. This place is popular for its delicious coffees and delightful cakes. The antique and mismatched furniture gives it a unique charm that will also make your camera happy!

Zeit für Bröt

Mouthwatering. That’s the word that comes to mind when thinking of nearly every item on the menu at this place. Zeit für Bröt offers an array of beverages, yummy sandwiches, breads, and desserts. Our favourite sweet treat are ‘schnecke’, and they come in a variety of mouthwatering flavours. There are three locations in the city, so you have no excuse to not make a stop!

Hoppenworth & Ploch

Germans take their coffee seriously, and as a result, there are lots of quality local roasters in Frankfurt. Hoppenworth & Ploch is a great spot to set up for a few hours of work, catch up with friends, or simply stop by for a quick cup of java. You’ll love their distinct roast, so we suggest picking up a bag as a souvenir!

Asian & Middle Eastern Food

Traditional food in Frankfurt certainly doesn’t appeal to the spicy palate, but that’s okay! As we said before, the food scene in Frankfurt is very international and you can find anything your cravings and stomach desires. This section will explore our top recommendations for Asian food in the city.

Pattaya Thai Imbiss

Located in the middle of the Red Light District in the trendy Bahnhofsviertel, Pattaya is one of the best spots in Frankfurt for your filling of spicy and savoury Thai food. But don’t expect to be wowed by the decor. The place itself is rather small and only has a few seats. It’s fair to say the effort here goes into the food, and you can certainly taste it! Grab a meal to go and prepare to be impressed.

Góc Phố

If you’re more into Vietnamese food, you’ll find plenty of spots to satisfy your cravings. Góc Phố is one of our favourite spots in Frankfurt, and it’s popular among vegetarians. Located in the heart of the city, this spot is always a sure bet.

Bar Shuka

Also located in the Bahnhofsviertel, Bar Shuka is an amazing spot you’ll be more than pleased with. Featuring an impressive menu with Middle Eastern, Israeli dishes, and delicious cocktails, this place will leave you speechless. And don’t even get us started on the decor – you’ll feel like you’re in Tel Aviv!

Bars for Drinks

Alcohol laws in Germany are pretty relaxed, and public consumption is more than normal. Aside from the thousands of kiosks you can buy drinks in, there are some key spots you won’t want to miss. We recommend hitting these places up in the afternoon or evening before getting into the party mood to hit the clubs!

Oosten

Located near Hafen Park, Oosten is a local hot spot for sunset drinks. Grab a spot on the rooftop, or on the ground terrace, and enjoy the activity of passersby in the park and on the river. Or if it’s a rainy day, a table with a window view will also do!

Main Café

If we had to choose a spot to watch the sun set over the skyline, it would be Main Café. Located on the Sachsenhausen side of the river Main, this place is tucked away under a staircase! You’ll know you’re there once you see the tables, umbrellas, and crowds of people. It’s a great spot to enjoy a crisp glass of apfelwein as you enjoy the impressive Frankfurt skyline.

City Beach

Looking for a hidden beach oasis with probably the most impressive skyline view in Frankfurt? Then head to City Beach! Hidden away on a rooftop of a car park and department store, this place will blow your mind. Equipped with shallow pools, sand, and palm trees, it’s a great place to spend a summer afternoon and evening. You’ll have to pay a cover charge after a certain hour, but we promise you it’s worth it.

Where to Stay in Frankfurt

Our top recommendation for accommodation in Frankfurt am Main is Five Elements Hostel, the top rated hostel in the city. While it might be located in the middle of the Red Light District, don’t let that deter you from it. Five Elements Hostel has a reputation for being a safe, clean, and incredibly fun hostel for travellers of all kinds. Offering dorms, private rooms, and apartments, you’ll certainly find the right room for you. You can also partake in their free, daily activities, and enjoy Happy Hour at the bar every night from 6 – 8 PM. And if this isn’t enough, wait until you meet their incredible staff who will ensure your stay will be one you won’t soon forget.
