6 Things to See in Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a great city to explore. Enjoy Nordic cuisine, wander along the canals, or take advantage of the free bikes and discover Copenhagen like a local.
Being home to the Carlsberg Brewery, the Danish Royal family in Amalienborg Palace, and the 17th Century Rosenborg Castle – there are plenty of things to see and do. Read on for 6 Things to See in Copenhagen!
1. Tivoli Gardens
Opened in 1843, Tivoli is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Located in the centre of Copenhagen, it’s known for its beautiful gardens and the 28 ride funfair. There’s also an aquarium, concert hall, open air stages, and places to eat and drink. If you’re in Copenhagen over Christmas don’t miss the Christmas Market and firework shows.
2. Nyhavn – “New Haven”
What was once a busy commercial port is now full of cafes, bars, and restaurants. They’re all set in the traditional colourful port front buildings. But be careful of the prices as they aren’t too backpacker friendly. But you can buy drinks nearby and enjoy the views like the locals do.
3. The Little Mermaid
Denmark’s most famous author is Hans Christian Andersen who wrote the fairytale we all love. Carl Jacobsen (founder of Carlsberg Breweries) commissioned the sculpture and presented A Pequena Sereia as a gift to the city in 1913! Copenhagen celebrates her birthday every year!
4. Strolling the Strøget
Measuring in at 1,1 kms long, Strøget is Europe’s longest pedestrian street. It flows through the city’s shopping area from City Hall Square all the way to Kongens Nytorv, where you can get incredible views of the sea. The street is also home to some of Denmark’s most famous designers.
5. Christiania
Famous for being a self-proclaimed autonomous area within Copenhagen, Christiania is a must visit! The 850 residents have their own laws apart from Copenhagen and Denmark; the most famous being the legalisation of cannabis. The community is popular with artists, activists and those interested in New Age lifestyles. Look out for the political graffiti but be warned, photography is not allowed.
6. Louisiana – Museum of Modern Art
A haven for modern art lovers, this outstanding gallery is a short train ride from Copenhagen and set in a unique beach-front location. With over 3,000 permanent artworks and rotating exhibitions from world famous artists, it’s a great place to soak up some culture.
In Summer you can picnic on the beach, and in winter walk amongst the sculptures in the snow. On a clear day you can even see across the Øresund to Sweden! One of the greatest things to see while in Copenhagen!
