Pride, Eurovision, Milkshake and Naked Underwear Parties
It’s all going on in Rotterdam! The Netherlands has long been a recognised progressive country that celebrates diversity and the LGTB community, and now its famous port city is waving the rainbow flag even more fervently. Not only is this vibrant city celebrating the 6TH year of Rotterdam Pride festival this autumn, but the utterly fantastic and bizarre Eurovision 2020 song contest is hosted in Rotterdam next year!
Rotterdam is an awesome place to enjoy some LGTB friendly bars and clubs, living up to the Dutch reputation of liberal thinking and embracing diversity; regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Over 95% of Dutch people approving of same-sex relationships and the Netherlands is home to the world’s first LGTB rights organisation, supporting equality and diverse communities. It’s also just a great city to enjoy a party and the pulsating gay scene here adds some spice to Rotterdam night life. Check out our favourite gay orientated hotspots for night owls, from cafes and bars to cabaret and clubs: Rotterdam has it all covered for a spanking time!
Best Gay Orientated Cafes
Famous on the scene since the 1920s, Café De Unie is a known hang-out for ambience and a full suite of drinks, food and late night party vibe.
Bar Loge 90 is an exuberant gay hotspot which also serves up some live music and late-night performances. During the day it has a chilled vibe and a people-watching terrace to relax and grab a coffee or sip on a cocktail.
Best for Wine and Dine
Our favourite gay-friendly spot to have a glass of vino and a side of olives is Nostra Wine Bar. It also serves up a full restaurant menu and has a few terrace seats to enjoy the street view. Slip onto a seat at the fancy bar or just drop in for ‘high tea’ in this delicious setting.
Best of Drinks and Drag
Bonaparte is a straight up gay bar with a great selection of drinks and drag, all served up on a pretty plate from 10pm to 6am.
Best known for a late night last drink place, Keerweer Café has some entertaining acts, from cabaret to drag and music performances. Often a hit with the late- night crowd.
For something a little more of a spectacle check out the experiential art at Performance Bar where you can expect the unexpected in an all immersive show. This one is hard to explain; but if you like to shake things up then definitely put it on your menu.
Best For Cocktails
Café Strano is a classy joint for a cocktail at the slick bar, or to throw a few dance moves later in the night. Or Mood Bar for a cocktail and a cruise.
Best Dance Spots
For electronic music and some upcoming acts live on stage, make a beeline to Now and Wow Club on the 10TH floor.
Best for Cruising
For a literal cruise, check out his boozy boat for some waterfront fun. De Regenboog motors around the waterways of Rotterdam and even to Amsterdam for a memorable voyage.
Mood Bar is best known for hosting the famous Underwear and Naked Party (which is exactly what it sounds like), but on less sensational nights is known as a male orientated cruising bar. Dress up (or dress off) depending on the day.
Gay Sauna Finland offers something more steamy than your average hot tub; check out the menu for drinks and dinner or fun and frolics of a same-sex nature. Open late for a whirlpool and cruise.
LGTB Party Events
If you’re in town for Rotterdam Pride (22-29TH September 2019) then you will be happy to hear that there are plenty of specially arranged bar and club events to coincide with this week and beyond, and of course the Pride Walk: Parade of Love. This year the theme is House of Colours, so yourself some colourful kit on to celebrate all things LGTBQI! As always everyone is welcome, you can find the events hosted in bars and clubs across Rotterdam qui.
There’s also an indoor festival thrown by the famous Milkshake Festival for Pride week so expect some awesome club moves and shaking of the booty as this dance festival seriously ups the amps!
Everyone’s favourite song competition comes to Rotterdam in 2020 in all its glitz and glory. With Ahoy Rotterdam stadium hosting the event, expect bars around town to go Eurovision bonkers when it comes to celebrating the highs and lows with theme parties and plenty of camp costumes. For all things Eurovision see qui.
For a place to sleep in Rotterdam then look no further than the port city’s favourite hostel, Room Rotterdam. With a waterfront location, friendly bar and café and cosy vibes, you’re sure to love it!
