A Traveller's Guide to Hungarian

The meeting point of the best walking tour in Budapest is Mádache Imre Square. The first place you’ll visit will be the district of Buda. Some of the most important places in the city take place in this district. Here you’ll find the Church of Maria Maddalena, one of the oldest buildings in Buda. However, here you’ll also see one of the most appreciated attractions by tourists: the colorful Matthias Church.

The first thing you’ll visit in Buda will be the Fishermen’s Bastion. If you are a fan of history you’re in the right place! This is one of the symbolic monuments of Budapest. You’ll be amazed by its beauty! This majestic building was included in the list of UNESCO heritage sites in 1987. It was built to celebrate Hungary’s millenary history. It’s characterized by seven decorative watchtowers. Each one of these symbolizes one of the seven Magyar tribes that conquered Hungary. Just behind the Bastion, you can see the statue of Santo Stefano, the first Hungarian king.

Buda Castle

Afterward, in the Buda district, and precisely on the Várhegy hill you’ll be in front of the Buda Castle. This place absolutely is worth a visit!

This imposing and majestic building was born as a fortress in the Middle Ages but later became a splendid Renaissance palace. The castle, also called the Royal Palace, has been destroyed many times during its history. It was destroyed for the first time during the Turkish occupation and then rebuilt in a neo-baroque style. The second time it was destroyed in the Second World War. At the entrance to the castle, you will find an impressive bronze statue of the bird of prey Turul, a symbol of the Hungarian kingdom. Through the “Lion Gate,” you can access the internal courtyard. While inside the palace you will be able to visit an important art gallery, the National Library, and the historical museum of Budapest.

After exploring the Buda Castle, you’ll find the Matthias’ Church.

One of the best-known symbols of the city and one of the most important religious places in Budapest. The importance of this Church is also because coronations and royal weddings have been celebrated here. In the period of the Turks, they used it as a mosque. The official name is the Assumption Church of Buda Castle. But it is also called Matthias Church as the wedding of King Matthias I was celebrated here.

Inside the church, you will notice that oriental influences mix with Hungarian folk tradition. You will also admire a colorful roof and the internal frescoes. The exterior of the church features terracotta tiles and a tall bell tower. At the top of the Matthias Bell Tower there’s a great view of the whole city! A very must see spot!

Budapest’s Synagogue

You’ll then arrive at Budapest’s Synagogue.

The synagogue of Budapest is a must in the Hungarian capital. It’s the second largest synagogue in the world after the one in New York and the largest in Europe. This synagogue, also called Tabakgasse Synagogue is located in the Jewish quarter of Pest. The purpose of this temple was to pay tribute to the thousands of Hungarian Jewish soldiers who died in the First World War. In the courtyard, you will find the Tree of Life, which is one of the favorite elements of the tourists. The building also includes the Heroes’ Temple, the cemetery, the Memorial, and the Jewish Museum.

Its purpose was to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of Hungary. Here you’ll see a mix of architectural styles. The base of the building is in the Baroque style, the facade has a Gothic style and the roof has Renaissance elements.

The building has about 30 entrances and many courtyards that you can visit. Inside, in the northern part, you’ll find the prime minister’s residence, where take place various congresses.
