Best walking tour in Copenhagen

The meeting point of the walking tour in Copenhagen is Radhuspladsen, the Town Hall Square. From here you’ll start with the main monuments of the city.

First of all, you’ll be in front of the main seat of the Danish royal family: Amalienborg Palace. It’s one of the greatest works of Danish Rococo architecture. In the center of the Palace’s courtyard, you’ll find a monumental equestrian statue of Frederick V, who was the founder of the palace. When Her Majesty the Queen is in her Palace her presence is signaled by the Dannebrog flag. Hope you’ll be lucky to see it!

The public can visit two of the four palaces. The first one is the Levetzau Palace, a small museum where you can admire some of the private apartments with the royal family’s jewels. The second one is Moltke Palace, a big room used to welcome guests during important events. Amalienborg is guarded by the Royal Bodyguard. There is the ceremony of guard change every day at 12 on Amalienborg Square.

You can’t miss Nyhavn – a very magical place!

Among the best-known and most popular places is certainly the colorful Nyhavn Canal in Copenhagen, the old port of the Danish capital. Here you will be able to admire colourful historical buildings and many boats docked. The idea of King Christian V was to create a canal to connect the center of Copenhagen with the port. Just at the beginning of the canal, you will find a huge anchor, a symbol that commemorates the Danish sailors who died during the Second World War. Today Nyhavn is a trendy place with countless clubs, bars, and restaurants where you can try typical Danish cuisine. This area is very busy in the summer, when both locals and tourists spend a nice evening in the bars. You can’t miss this popular place!

El Little Mermaid is Denmark’s most famous tourist attraction. The small bronze statue was inspired by one of the best-known fairy tales by the Danish writer Andersen. This iconic statue gained a certain popularity thanks to some photos published in an American newspaper until it became the most famous symbol of Copenhagen. You can’t miss the visit to such an important spot. Don’t forget to take a photo with the Little Mermaid!

Rosenborg Castle

Then you’ll find one of the most Instagrammable places in Copenhagen!

Rosenborg Castle is a must-see place if you are in Copenhagen! This very suggestive place is located in the center of the city. Its origins date back to the seventeenth century, when King Christian IV wanted a summer residence, surrounded by royal gardens. It always has been an amazing residence without defensive functions. Nevertheless, today it’s known as a castle. Rosenborg Castle is above all a museum in which the Danish Royal House has collected the treasure of the Crown. Here you’ll also find the royal family’s precious objects, paintings, and weapons. You’ll be amazed!

Christiansborg Palace

We’re not even joking with this one! Christiansborg Palace is located in Slotsholmen, on a small island in Copenhagen. This building (also called Third Christiansborg) was completed in 1928 and used as the seat of the Danish parliament. It’s also hosting the offices of the prime minister and the supreme court of Denmark. The royal family still uses some areas of the palace, such as the staterooms.

The most significant room you have to visit is certainly the Throne Room. Here the Queen greets government officials, kings, presidents, and ambassadors. Another unmissable room of Christiansborg Palace is the Great Hall. Considered the heart of the palace, in this room Queen’s gala dinners and state visits take place.

Carlsberg Glyptotek: the iconic museum

For a great cultural experience, you’ll move to a very iconic museum in Copenhagen. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a private gallery dedicated to painting and sculpture. It’s considered one of the most complete and important museums in the city. The main areas of the museum are two: the largest collection of Ancient Art in Northern Europe and the collection of Danish and French art. In this second area, you’ll find the magnificent works by Renoir, Degas, Manet, and Cézanne as well as the beautiful collection of Gauguin.
