What to eat in Amsterdam

What to Eat in Amsterdam?

Besides being a city of lovely canals, historic buildings, and charming coffee shops, Amsterdam also holds its own when it comes to food.

And what’s traveling without sampling some of the local flavor to go along with the local sights, local colors, and local vibes, right? Just like visiting other popular European capital cities, you have to watch yourself. There is always two sets of places to eat: eateries which are popular with tourists and local  cheap eats. It’s always a good idea to mix and match the two.

Some of the more touristy restaurants in the city can leave you feeling a little conned, with high prices and low quality. But as long as you do your research and avoid the most popular tourist restaurants, the what to eat in Amsterdam becomes a less complicated question to answer.

Our guide to the what to eat in Amsterdam ‘musts’:

If you have a hankering for authentic Dutch cuisine to eat in Amsterdam, you need to stop by Restaurant Greetje at Peperstraat 23-25. This restaurant repackages traditional Dutch food into modern and professional culinary presentations. While the food may look modern and oh so chic, it still manages to preserve old school Dutch tastes. Dutch food might not have the global renown as say, French or Italian cuisine, but Restaurant Greetje definitely makes Dutch cuisine’s best points stand out.

Another Amsterdam culinary gem you need to check out when trying to decide what to eat in Amsterdam is Vis aan de Schelde at located at Scheldeplein . This is an out-of-the-way place which is very popular among Amsterdam residents. And for good reason-its awesome collection of fresh oyster, crayfish, monkfish, and squid offerings are extremely addicting and oh so fresh.  It’s certainly not the cheapest restaurant in Amsterdam, but the quality of the produce speaks for itself.  They have an awesome lunch menu with three courses for a reasonable price and their menu changes regularly due to the season.

leeman doner amsterdam

If you would like something exotic to eat in Amsterdam, there’s Leeman Doner located at Van Woustraat 160. This place is a local legend for its amazing doner (also known as shwarma) and Turkish pizza.

If you like pizza, there are many New York Pizza joints you can stop by. Not as awesome as their namesakes but, hey, you’re on a budget.

If you have a hankering for some Chinese food with a distinct Dutch colonial twist, make sure to pay Kam Yin on Nieuwebrugsteeg a visit. Their great fusion of Surinamese and Chinese food is sure to tantalize and satisfy you without breaking your travel budget.
