10 Ways Students Can Travel for Free
So, you’re probably here because you’re a student and looking for ways to travel for free?
The student lifestyle can be tight on the wallet, but we’re going to show you 10 ways students can travel for free. While travel seems to be an expensive hobby, it can be affordable, or free, if you know where to look. Your uni years are easily the most exciting time in your life, and they should be paired with travelling, especially if you go on an Erasmus Year! To make sure money doesn’t stop you from exploring the world, here are 10 ways students can travel for free.
Transportation can often be the most expensive part of travelling, but there are ways to make it cheap, or free! Hitchhiking in Europe is pretty safe and is actually quite easy in Europe’s more expensive countries. such as the Netherlands or Germany. In Southern Europe, it can take a little bit longer for cars to pick you up, but at least it’s an adventure and rewarding when you manage to finally get that lift you’ve been waiting for! We think it’s a cool way for students to travel for free, but only if you’re comfortable of course.
A great way for students to travel for free is to use platforms like Workaway. It’s a platform where you can get in touch with local communities, projects, and families who are in need of help in exchange for accommodation and sometimes food. It’s a very rewarding and fun experience, and puts you in touch with some pretty incredible people.
3. Teach English or Another Language
For native English speakers, Europe is full of work opportunities. But if you are skilled in another language, it’s likely you’ll find people who want to learn or improve their own skills. For example, families all over Europe look for Nannies or after school care who can help their children learn or improve their language skills. While this might seem like more of a job rather than a way for students to travel for free, it’s a cool way to see the world, especially if the family you find are adventurous.
4. Content Creation Exchange
With everyone having a smartphone, we’ve all become content creators to a certain extent. By offering qualitiy content, students have found this is a great way to travel for free. In fact, Europe’s Famous Hostels has a content exchange program with all destinations in their network. It’s called Checkout.note and works like this: our hostels will give content creators free accommodation in exchange for travel content. Content requests depend on the applicants duration of stay and available skills, but if you’re into writing or blogging, snapping great travel photos, or have videography skills, you should consider applying!
5. Car Relocations
If you don’t have a driver’s licence, then maybe this isn’t a great way for you to travel for free. Sometimes, people rent a car for a one way trip, which is perfectly fine, but means the car needs to be driven back to its original location. You can often rent those cars for free or pay only €1, providing you adhere to the conditions of drop off. Check out this page to see which cars need to be returned!
6. Skills Exchange
Everyone has special skills, so why not use them to your advantage? Perhaps you’re a skilled yoga teacher? Or maybe you’re a talented chef who enjoys cooking for people. Whatever the case, consider offering your skills in exchange for accommodation. We think this is a great way for students to travel for free, and a great way to network in your niche area of expertise.
For students there’s lots of scholarships available to help fund your time abroad. It’s worth looking into as it can save you thousands of euros. The most famous one in Europe is the Erasmus Scholarship which you can get for an exchange semester or an internship abroad. This is a great way to get to know another country and travel as a student.
8. Participate in Competitions & Giveaways
Many companies such as hotels, travel organisations, TV shows, and Instagram accounts offer competitions or giveaways where you can win amazing trips, free accommodation, and other travel related things. Of course there’s no guarantee you’ll win, but it costs nothing to at least try and someone has to be the lucky winner anyway!
Europe is well connected with bike paths and is one of the most adventurous ways students can travel for free. Depending on the region you choose, you can get around relatively quickly and easily. Many hostels offer bicycle parking, so you never have to worry about leaving it parked on the street. And if you find yourself in the Netherlands, we encourage you to check out Bikepacking Holland! It’s a cool initiative that started during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to address the need for safe travel. There are 15 independent and unique hostels scattered across the country, all of which are connected by bike paths.
10. Work or Volunteer in a Hostel
Most hostels offer great volunteer opportunities, providing you free accommodation in exchange for help. Maybe you’d like to work at reception, host an activity, or help set up breakfast every morning. Europe’s Famous Hostels offers lots of great volunteer opportunities.
